Marcel has two passions in life – boating and marine lawyering. A qualified shipwright, he owned and managed a successful boat building business for eighteen years before returning to university in order to fulfil a lifelong desire to pursue a career in law.
As a solicitor, Marcel has worked at prominent commercial law firms, studied Admiralty, Yacht and Yachting Law and attended International Maritime conferences. He uses his endeavouring spirit, extensive marine and commercial knowledge to skipper the Maritime and Commercial Legal practice, Vaarzon-Morel Solicitors.
Marcel sits on the board of directors of the NSW Ship and Boatbuilding Association (SBA), and is a member of the Boating Industry Association (BIA), the Maritime Law Association of Australia and New Zealand (MLAANZ), and Superyacht Australia. Marcel remains an active and enthusiastic yachtsman, and a passionate advocate for the maritime industry. He regularly publishes legal articles in the BIA Logbook, Marine Business and Ocean’s Magazine.
Kristina brings over 15 years of experience in the international superyacht industry to our practice having worked as a maritime business and operations executive for an international yacht management firm headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and as a senior seafaring crew member on large yachts cruising worldwide from 2006. Kristina has experience in matters relating to vessel sale and purchase, international charter, EU fiscal representation for VAT, vessel importation and shipping, commercial agreements, seafarer employment agreements and MLC, ISM, ISPS, Flag State compliance, yacht insurance, crew health insurance and accidents, shipyard maintenance and refit, work permit applications for foreign crew and offshore employment structures as well as first-hand business experience of industry service providers and practical knowledge of shipboard life as crew, emergency response, destination knowledge, high-end service and budgets.
Kristina serves on the Board of Directors of the International Superyacht Society (ISS) and in addition to her legal education, has extensive maritime professional training both at sea and on land.
Kristina earned a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice from the Australian National University admitting her to the Supreme Court of New South Wales as a lawyer in 2010. She achieved distinction in her studies of Maritime and International Trade Law, forming part of a Bachelor of Law from University of Newcastle, Australia awarded in 2009.
From 2007-2009, Kristina volunteered at the Federal Court of Australia as logistics manager for International Programs, and at the Environmental Defender’s Office Sydney as legal researcher while owning/operating a fair-trade business importing from South-East Asia. Kristina holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Anthropology from the University of Newcastle in 2005, having received the Dean’s Merit Award for Academic Achievement in 2003.
Kristina is inspired by the powerful and unique position of the superyacht industry to innovate toward sustainable and environmentally responsible solutions for the ocean.
Troy successfully completed a Bachelor of Law / Diploma in Legal Practice in 2013 after graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Economics in 2011. Troy was awarded the University of Newcastle LexisNexis Prize in Legal Practice in areas of Corporate Practice and Wills & Estates and Conveyancing.
Troy joined the team in 2015 and since he has appeared in various jurisdictions including, Local, District and Supreme Courts and the Federal Circut Court of Australia in various matters, including commercial litigation, civil litigation, professional negligence. Troy occasionally appears in Local Court criminal proceedings.
Troy has a particular interest in contracts and commercial law and has instructed counsel in the New South Wales Supreme Court concerning the Contracts Review Act and the Consumer Credit Law. Troy uses his commercial and contracts interest to complement Marcel's in-depth maritime knowledge.
Troy takes pleasure in drafting contracts with the aim to prevent disputes from arising in the first place and finding practical and commercial solutions to complex legal issues.
Troy co-authors numerous legal articles with Marcel in various marine publications including Marine Business and Ocean Magazine with the aim to inform the public about current legal matters affecting the industry.
Besides from the law, Troy has a particular interest in information technology and will use my spare time while at work, tinkering (with the aim of "improving") the firms file management systems and website.
Outside of work Troy enjoys; relaxing, cooking, and listening to music. He also dabbles in 3D graphic design.
Tamara joined Vaarzon-Morel Solicitors in July 2015 as Office/Administration Manager and Marketing and is a valued member of a team of lawyers who go above and beyond in meeting the needs of each and every new and existing client.
With over 25 years experience in the customer service industry and 15 years in management Tamara understands the importance of customer service and meeting client needs and knows what it takes to manage a business.
Tamara completed a Bachelor of Business degree at the University of Newcastle, majoring in Marketing and Management beginning a career in the Banking and Finance industry while still at University. Having completed her degree Tamara secured the position as a Building Society branch manager for a highly customer-focussed organisation and continued in that role for over 7 years. Since then Tamara has managed her own family-own
